Having a good CV can mean the difference between receiving an interview or getting lost at the bottom of the candidate pile, and as such there is a variety of resume advice for job seekers to use. At times, creating the "perfect CV" can feel like an impossible game of hangman, with you desperately trying to read the hiring manager's mind and guess what they are looking for.
However, a 2014 survey by Reed.co.uk has revealed the top three "Ls" that epitomise what recruiters value in a resume - and they may be simpler than you expect.
According to the survey, the most important aspect of a CV is the way the information is organised. When your points are arranged in a logical order, it is much easier for the hiring manager to access the details quickly and efficiently rather than having to decipher it.
It is important that you organise your education employment history in a top-down hierarchy, thereby putting the newest and most relevant information first. You should also try to structure your CV in a way that reflects the job requirements, rather than how you see yourself.
Survey respondents rated the layout of the CV as the second most significant factor. Your resume should be formatted in a way that's easy to read and highlights your most valuable assets, making you more attractive to your potential employer. It should be in a simple, easy-to-read font, and work to create a "story" about your skills, showing why you are the right person for the position.
The Houston Chronicle says that the way you arrange your CV depends on your level of experience and the kind of job you are applying for. For example, if you are a new graduate you may want to downplay your lack of an employment history by putting that information last, and putting details about your skills and qualifications in a more prominent position.
Finally, the recruiters surveyed by Reed said that the third most important aspect of good CV is the length. The recruiter does not want to have to read your entire life history, they only need the information that is relevant to the position you are applying for.
Many experts recommend that your CV should be between one and two pages in length. This should give you enough room to highlight your best qualities and experience, but not so long that you have a chance to go off topic.
By following these three Ls, you will have the best chance of standing out to the recruiters and getting the IT contract role or position you want.
