Job Description

Core duties and responsibilities

Engineering and Technical
  • Leads in the scoping activities to support the development of Business Cases asset replacement and enhancement projects.
  • Leads in the preparation of Project Technical Requirements.
  • Leads the Track Discipline in the role of Project Engineer and Coordinating Project Engineer to satisfy PTA's Project Engineering Competency and Engineering Management Framework.
  • Leads on development of and revisions to Code of Practice and technical standards as directed.
  • Maintains a detailed knowledge of current technical and industry standards and identified opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensures projects comply with PTA's Safety Management System Requirements.
  • Maintains accurate Track Asset Information as required.
Project and Contract Management
  • Leads in the management of contracts including the development of documents and specifications, evaluation of tenders and contract administration.
  • Liaises with stakeholders, both internal and external, on the delivery of projects, including providing feedback and recommendations to the Rail Principal Engineer. 
  • Undertakes research and prepares project specific reports as required.
  • Provides technical advice and interdisciplinary coordination throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Undertakes other responsibilities as directed by the Principal Rail Engineer.
1.    Core Competencies
  • Relevant professional qualifications that would satisfy the admission requirement for Professional membership of the Institution of Engineers Australia.
  • Proven experience on projects in regard to the planning, design and construction of infrastructure development projects.
  • Proven experience in design, construction and maintenance of Track Infrastructure in a public transport environment.
2.    Management and Leadership
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and management of contracts and an ability to work with contractors in an environment of major permanent way maintenance outsourcing.
  • Demonstrated experience of Rail Safety Management and System Safety Management.
  • Demonstrated Technical Leadership in the Track Discipline, Design, Construction and Asset Management.
3.    Communication and Interpersonal
  • Well-developed verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, and ability to negotiate required outcomes and/or resolve conflicts.
4.    Conceptual, Analytical and Problem Solving
  • Demonstrated conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to provide innovative solutions to solving problems.
5.    Computer Literacy
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of appropriate computer packages and technology.     
6.    Special Requirements
  • Satisfactory completion of required medical examinations to verify physical fitness to perform the duties of the position cost to be covered by CUA Agency/Candidate.
  • Provision of a current National Police Clearance certificate, dated 3 months or less from the date of application for the position.
